PROSE PASSAGE- THEMATIC FOCUS

When looking at a Prose Passage to figure out the thematic focus you need to look for the main idea or central idea.

The term “Thematic” refers to the Theme and how the theme and main idea come together to answer the prose passage question.

Themes like Conventions, Manners and Oppression, manipulation, could be themes that occur in a passage which could be helpful in solving the Prose Passage Essay Question

Example: In a well organized essay, discuss how alice walker conveys the meaning of The Flowers and how she prepares the reader for the ending of this short story.

For this Prose Passage Essay Question you could use the theme of loss of innocence to show her meaning and how she prepares the reader for the ending of this story

Myops loss of innocence is a theme in the passage which can help you solve the prose passage question.

You can say the author conveys the meaning of the flowers by showing how myop loses her innocence  and then gains maturity and how she prepares the reader for the ending by showing how myop slowly loses innocence and shifts from the child to a mature young lady. knowing that she was able to balance good and evil and to open her eyes to reality.

How to Prepare For The Prose Passage

The prose passages, questions doesn't focus on what the author says but on the  language and rhetorical choices made by the author.  In the AP exam, prose essay question test your sharpness of rhetorical concepts.  In the prose essay you are asked to analyze how such Rhetorical concepts such as the following .... are used to explain the question.

STAY FOCUS ON THE ESSAY QUESTION!!!

Analytical Focus:  For the Analytical focus you can use different literary elements to make your passage more effective and detailed. 

Diction ,Characterization, Imagery, Style, Symbols, Setting, Narrative Pace, Structure,Tone, Mood,  Attitude.

Example: In a well organize essay, discuss how Alice Walker conveys the meaning of "The Flowers" and how she prepares the reader for the ending of this short story.

Answer: Therefore, for this prose essay question you can use imagery, symbol, setting, diction and style to convey the meaning and how she prepares the reader for the ending of the short story.The diction of paragraph, four and five also contributes to the sudden shift or translation in the passage.

In the beginning of the story it was full of joy then in paragraph four and five it shifted through means of diction to show how she preparing the reader for the end of the novel.

In the passage The Flowers the imagery contributes to the setting. For example the author uses crops, corn, cotton, peanuts and squash as examples to show that the harvest is on the way and that they are in southern part of the United States. This contributes to the meaning of the passage by showing how the setting played a role to what the author is saying.

How To Prepare for AP English Exam

Intro:
The AP English- Advance Placement English Exam
It will take place Thursday, May 05, 2011 at 8am.

Steps of to Prepare for the Exam:
1. Have a good breakfast.
2. Review some of your notes the day before.
3. Get a good sleep.
4. Don't stress yourself!!















In order to have a successful testing experience, you should be aware of what is expected of you and what the conditions will be in the testing room. Before taking the actual test take a practice test, and review the policy and procedures that follow the test . If you have any questions the day of your exam talk to your AP Coordinator.

Things to bring to the Exam:
1. No.2 Pencils with eraser 
2. Pens
3. Your six digit school code 
4. A watch
5. Photo ID
6. Know your Social Security number
Things to not bring to the Exam
1. Cellphones & camera or any other electronic 
2. Books
3. Food or drinks.
